It just reduces it, as far as I'm aware. Spaced armour is intended against HEAT shells.

It reduces it.
Its equal to hitting armour but not penning. Penning gives full damage roll.
So the spash works out from the impact point.
The spacing gives the splash further distance to travel and reduces the potential damage.
Depending on the HE fired and the spaced armour, it can be reduced to 0 on multiple occasions.
look for the app “armour inspector”
The paid version is very good but the free version will let you test it, just on restricted tier tanks.

It works similar for Heat.
The armour doesnt negate it, it just provideds an inital impact point with distance to main armour.
After Heat hits the first layer is loses penetration very rapidly after it.
So by the time the Heat hits the main armour, the penetration is reduced to the point that it possibly cant pen it.

HE explodes on first impact. (Ignore crew voice that says “that one bounced” its incorrect)
So hitting spaced armour means it cant pen the main armour and get a full damage roll.
Both pics are an ISU-152 firing HE at a SuperPershing. (If shots hit exact same spot)
The top pic is it hitting the spaced armor of turret.
It receives 4 hits but 0 pen. Damage is lost only via splash damage and he survives.
The bottom pic is it hitting the turret main armor.
2 shots hit it with one penning doing a full damage roll. The second would kill him with splash damage even if it didnt pen.

It might help if there is a specific tank you are wondering about. I would be happy to run some HE penetration tests on my press account for you?

Here is a 183 firing Hesh at the spaced armour.
Hesh has pen of 220mm. Spaced armour 38mm plus primary armour behind 76mm, this is less then 220mm hesh pen but it still doesnt pen. But there is splash damage(which is alot from 183’s)
HE and Hesh are explosive ammo. They have only one layer they can pen.
- So hitting primary armor, If they pen then its full damage they will deal. if they dont pen then its splash damage.
- So hiting spaced armor they can’t pen the primary armor, they can only deal splash damage.
