While I think that the system is pretty fair at all, it's just ridiculous how hard some specific tanks are to master. I'm not even sure anymore if this depends on skill. It more feels like pure luck is needed for some tanks. (KV-2 for example)

Imo it's as fair as it can be, but it's also luck dependent. Today aced my KV-4 because a red light jumped on my turret. 850 + dmg by pure luck. The KV-2 is really tough, but rewarding.

Acing most of all needs luck. If there are any good players on your team in the lower tiers, you can say goodbye to the big M.

Generally speaking, especially in lower tiers, what you need for an Ace is a bad enemy team and a bad green team, so the red team doesn't kill you and lets you farm damage while the green team doesn't take away the red HPs too fast.

It's a bit different in higher Tiers (8-10) as there it is more about being in the right spot for the way the game is developing. Of course this is also a bit about luck but also skill. Plus you need to be able to also capitalize on a good situation once you have it. I was on Vineyards today in my Centurion 7/1 and farming damage from the middle hills like crazy but when the game was turning towards us I became too cocky and overextended out of cover - bamm, the red Deathstar killed me and I was stuck with "only" 3800 dmg and a first class. I could've easily farmed some more 1000-2000 damage and a few kills that game but wasn't focussed enough.
