Ok, so we finally have Mods again, which means we also have to start being nice again - boo hoo, no more just posting to gameplay because its the only one used!

So, we do have some active off-topic threads anyway and after seeing Romsitsa's and eforsters29 recent posts, plus I know IrmaBexc may also have a tank model soft spot, I thought I would see who else does!

Not tank model... but I do own a radio controlled hasegawa 1/300 scale model of the battleship Musashi. I've always had a huge fascination for the ijn during world war 2. I became a bit of an expert on their carriers and large capital ships in my younger days.

The model now sits in a display case in the loft space....its obscenely massive for a model. I remember my folks buying it for me one xmas, I was 13yo. Took me 4 months to build and paint it, then my dad took me to bournville model yachting lake. I'll never forget the look on my fellow remote sailors faces when we put this behemoth in the water alongside their sail craft and tugboats, pure intimidation.....that is until it sunk after two minutes of movement. Four months of painstaking building and I forgot the most simple of things.....waterproof grease on the propeller shafts :(

Fortunately it went down in only 2ft of water and was retrieved without dignity, but watching the mighty musashi's 'B' turret float past a sniggering pleasure craft operator was something that stuck with me for more than a while.

And when I reach the gates of heaven, Saint Peter I will tell..."one more soldier reporting sir, I've served my time in hell".

Model building has been a dilemma of mine for as long as I can remember. Their looks are astoundishing and yet I ABSOLUTELY suck at both assembling and painting/decaling. The fact that the main market for these products being mostly high income nations isnt helping much with the conversion rate for kits and equipment costs either. Either way, I built an easy-to-assemble Bismarck and retrograded to LEGO. It might not be as beautiful as a model kit but besides the looks it is just more practical in every aspect as far as my opinion goes.

Built Airfix ships in my youth. Campbelltown was very fiddly. Also the Saturn V, but that was quite dull. Bismarck was my favourite, I think. Never did a tank.

Always wanted to build the Bismarck or Enterprise by Tamiya and was so annoyed with my parents when I didn't get the Saturn 5 :izmena:

Not as annoyed as I was when a small brother knocked mine over.

Before health and safety went mad you could blow up your model battleships with fireworks, which us kids could buy.   And why not?

Used to set fire to some of my airfix ships in the bath (I wasnt in the bath). They burned nicely..and sank well...my mom soon put a stop to it when she noticed the walls were covered in black smudges.

Burning planes flying out of the bedroom window...

Or the discovery that, whilst ordinary matches blew out when fired from the Britain's 25pdr, putting a piece of firelighter on the sharpened end of a dead match meant it kept burning... Great gun, that.
