I posted on another thread about my love of Galaga and Phoenix as the former featured in Wargames which I watched again for the 1st time in many many years...

I wasted many an hour and 10p in the arcade in my home town as a youth, it defo counted as a misspent youth as much of the time was when I should have been at school and it's given me an obsessive personality on games I like :)

My top 5 are below, 1st 3 were easy but picking the other two was soooooo hard and I've had to cheat with a joint 5th :)

What's yours and why?

1= Galaga, Galaxians on steroids, I love Galaxians too and was tough choosing between them, this is probably the game I spent most on, loved this thing.

1= Phoenix, this got me my 1st girlfriend, impressing her with my dazzling video game skills and also my 1st holiday romance and non-British girl-friend, in 1982, Benidorm, impressing a Spanish girl again with said skills and my attempts to use the Spanish O level I was doing.  Whilst most of my other video game time, contributed to less than stellar o level results, mostly C's, this defo helped and is why I got an A for Spanish.  So not all video game playing as a youth is misspent :)

3 Battlezone, this has got to be the 1st 3d tank game, of it's time it was mind-blowing.

4 Defender, it felt like you needed 3 arms to play it and it got sooo hard, it's a proper challenge.

5= Donkey Kong, Mario, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong what's not to love.

5= Tempest, Psychedelic man, 1 remember 1st time I saw someone play it and thinking I've no idea what is going on but I want to play it!  Chris Crawford wrote in 1982 that unlike Pac-ManTempest "intimidates many beginners because it appears to be unwinnable"; its smoothly increasing difficulty, however, encourages players to continue playing - It's the 1st known evidence of Rigging in Video Games ;)

Golden Axe

Street Fighter (and later, mortal Kombat)

Battle Zone

Defender

Not an arcade game but Metal Gear for NES was awesome

I rarely had enogh pocket money for the rare times the fun fair came to town for some coin op action. Needless to say those rare times it was all about pac man, space invaders and Star Wars.

My formative gaming youth was mostly on the ZX-81, Vic-20, speccy and beeb, but i'll definitely add Astro Wars if we're getting all nostalgic like!

WoT Blitz eat yer heart out :)

Awesome!

I was a very thin kid, a bag crisps for dinner(lunch to Southerners) and 40p for the machines :)

Plus I had a job collecting glasses in me Da’s working mens club Sunday lunchtimes which earned me £10, a fortune in them days...

Luckily the checks on whether I was 16 amounted to the steward asking me Da if I was 16 and me being tall :)

Oh man though, the Sunday lunch time strippers in a small North Eastern mining town are not something any teenager or in fact anyone should be exposed to!

My favorite arcade game of all time is Yie Ar Kung Fu. Legendary. Still playing it from time to time on PC emulator.

Galaga was fun too. There are couple other games that i used to play those years, but i can't remember the names.

I've got Frogger on the Amazon Firestick thing, albeit called "Crossy Road". Not played it, hated the original.

Edit : my favourite arcade game still predates any of this computer nonsense - Torpedo Run. Continuous belt of little destroyers, you are a sub commander, sink them with your torpedoes. Much fun.

lol, I remember that, epic fun...

I remember many days playing a game with a plane on a string and you had to land it on an aircraft carrier, can’t remember the name of it though, it was a phantom not one of those new fangled VTOL Harriers :). That is the best ever FIight Simulator!

I did feel bad about leaving it out, especially as I still play it now and again on my phone, the trackball thing, man that was a fine piece of engineering...

Moving a generation on, in my student days we had a few time sinks.

NHLPA '92 almost cost me my finals, we were all quite fanatical about being the best at it!!

Woe bedite amateurs who'd stumble in after a night clubbing. A triple digit defeat wasn't impossible :D

Street Fighter 2 was always hotly contested too.
