Ive never seen a shot go through a gun mantlet.

So what are the game mechanics behind them? Do shots that hit them just autobounce? And if not, what happens and under what conditions can you pen them?

Any help will be appreciated.

Gun mantlet counts as spaced armor.

As talha said, they count as spaced armor. If you shoot HEAT you will not pen, you need to have the needed penetration to be able to penetrate the mantlet.

Being a noob, is it just WG that count it as spaced, or in reality are gun mantlets spaced?

I simply thought they were simply very strong, solid armour!

hello.

welcome here.

gun mantlet mechanics is the same as the rest of penetration mechanics,

which has a good wiki and YouTube video on the official WG account.
https://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Battle_Mechanics

I suggest u check those.

i also suggest you take your shots from replays and study them in armor inspector or Wotinspector.com

Gun mantelets are thick. Plus they are in most places double layers, one mobile gun mantlet covering the turret armor beneath.

double layers are called spaced armor, which has its own specific action on specific shell types, etc...

Read my guides there

I want just that, and replay files.

So the mantlets are just thick pieces of armour covering the real turret armour but dont show up in the armour inspector?

Don't over complicate things. Think about it, you have a turret with really thick frontal armour and right in the middle of it there's literally a hole that goes all the way through where the gun is.

To make it a bit less of a weak spot there's a thick piece of steel attached to and moving with the gun, sometimes it's a flat slab, sometimes more of a cone.

Although it does look like in Blitz turret armour might be continuous, Mini might be able to shed a bit more light on that, in which case it is just a piece of very thick spaced armour.

And they do show in the armour inspector:

I meant that armour inspector doesn't add the thickness of the mantlet to the armour.

What really confuses me is that the t1 heavy and m6 gun mantlets can't be penned by anything. But the thickness on armour inspector isn't that high

T1 and M6 barely have any gun mantlet.

So how do you explain a APCR shell from a kv1s failing to penetrate when hitting their turrets at the centre?? Armour thickness is 150mm(blitzhanger) and penetration is 207. Not possible if the they don't have a gun mantlet.

Talha is right but so are you :)  If you look at the armour model on blitzhangar.com it shows the spaced armour on the mantlet, so whilst it's small on them it's still perfectly possible to hit it...
